The Braided River Campaign is a collaborative of passionate individuals, community leaders, and local organizations who seek to engage the city in a conversation about the future use of the Guild’s Lake Industrial Sanctuary by asserting our right to a transparent, community driven process.

THIS LAND

We acknowledge that we are on the traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Kathlemet, and Clackamas bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River. The Multnomah are a band of Chinooks that lived in this area. We thank the descendents of these tribes for being the original stewards and protectors of these lands and waters since time immemorial. We acknowledge that Portland, OR has the 9th largest urban Native American population in the US with over 380 tribes represented in the region. We also acknowledge the systemic policies of genocide, relocation and assimilation that impact many indigenous and Native American families to this day. We are honored to be guests upon these lands and waters. We pay our respect to elders, both past and present, who have stewarded this land throughout generations, through today.

OUR MISSION

Responding to centuries of industrial degradation and displacement in the Portland Harbor, the Braided River Campaign inspires and advocates for a new economic paradigm that centers environmental justice for historically marginalized people in the North Portland Harbor, from the Broadway Bridge to Sauvie Island. We are committed to a grassroots conversation with local communities and partners to envision a sustainable working waterfront that acknowledges and values culture, the climate crisis, systemic racism, and the health impacts of sacrificial zoning.  We seek to find a path forward that supports the integration of community, employment and a healthy environment. We are determined to prevent the gentrification of our waterfront for the on-going profit of developers. We honor the craftsmen and small businesses of the area and seek to protect them and those who seek skilled work spaces at affordable rates.

OUR GOALS

The BRC works towards multiple goals that include

  • Recognizing and removing sacrificial zoning that harms communities, the water, the land, and all living things in the Guild’s Lake Industrial Sanctuary

  • Transforming  the Guild’s Lake Industrial Area into an inclusive green working Waterfront that centers frontline communities and workers.

  • Reclaiming land along the river for communities that were forcibly removed, including for NW Tribes and Tribal members

  • Eliminating inequitable health disparities for Portland Harbor communities and workers who are exposed to excessive toxins compared with other communities in the metro region.
